If you don’t know Jenny Banai, you should. Not only is she incredibly talented, but she’s also incredibly relaxed, kind, and honest. It feels like months ago that we got together for this portrait session while she was working on her new album, and now in less than a week she’ll be releasing it!
Jenny and I actually go way back. Picture Meghan (me), fresh out of high school, coaching Jenny’s volleyball team which consisted of girls just starting or just about to start high school. Basically babies coaching babies (I’m 28 now. I consider my 17 year old self a baby).
So years have gone by, I’ve lost touch with all of my budding little athletes, and then one day I walk into JJ Bean in Yaletown and guess who I bump into? Jenny. We get to talking and I find out she’s living in Vancouver and working on her album. Which of course means that we’re getting together for a portrait session.
This is one of my favourites to date. It was just one of those shoots where you’re not sure how it’s going to all line up but then you start settling in and it’s like Oh yeah, this is magical. Jenny’s house was ridiculous, just so full of character and crazy details. As in everywhere you look you see something new and interesting. On top of that the light was great, a Sufjan Stevens record was playing in the background, and then Jenny’s got that hair (For real though, can you just take a minute to look at that mane? It’s incredible #hairgoals).
So take a look at the images, but also CHECK JENNY OUT. Her new album drops October 17 and let me tell you. You need it. It’s called Flowering Head and you can grab a vinyl or cd by ordering from her website, or you can grab her stuff off of iTunes or Spotify.
